Ovarian Cyst Treatment

What is an ovarian cyst?

Ovarian cysts are fluid-filled sacs that form in the ovaries. They are usually asymptomatic and are often identified by chance. However, in some cases they can grow and cause various symptoms.

Ovarian Cyst Symptoms

  1. Pelvic Pain When the ovarian cyst grows or twists, there may be pain in the pelvic area.
  2. Menstrual Irregularities: An ovarian cyst can cause irregularities in the menstrual cycle.
  3. Urinary Problems Large ovarian cysts can cause problems with urination or defecation by pressing during urination or bowel movements.
  4. Bleeding: Large cysts can also cause vaginal bleeding outside menstrual periods.
  5. Mass Feeling: Large ovarian cysts can cause a feeling of a mass in the abdomen.

Ovarian Cyst Diagnosis

An ovarian cyst is usually diagnosed by gynecological examination, ultrasonography and sometimes computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).

Ovarian Cyst Treatment Options

  1. Observation: Small and asymptomatic cysts are usually only observed and monitored.
  2. Medication Therapy: Hormonal drugs may be used to relieve pain and control cyst growth.
  3. Surgical Intervention: Large, painful or worrisome cysts may require surgery. Surgical options can be laparoscopic or open surgery.
