What is Colposcopy? Early Diagnosis of Cervical Cancer with Colposcopy in Istanbul

Colposcopyis a special diagnostic method that allows detailed examination of cellular changes in the cervix, vagina and vulva. Thanks to the light magnifying device called "colposcope", especially cervical cancer and precancerous lesions (CIN 1-2-3) can be detected in the early period.   1. A speculum is inserted into the vagina.

  2. The cervix is magnified and monitored with a colposcope.

  3. Acetic acid and Lugol's solution are applied to make the abnormal cells visible.

  4. If necessary, it can be removed from suspicious areas biopsy and pathologic examination It is done.


Is Colposcopy Painful? Is Anesthesia Required?

Colposcopy is usually painless and does not require anesthesia. However, there may be mild cramp-like pain during the biopsy. Sedative analgesia can be applied if necessary.


Is Colposcopy Safe During Pregnancy?

Yes. Colposcopy can be performed safely during pregnancy. But during this period endocervical curettage (ECC) procedure is not performed. Pregnant women diagnosed with CIN 2 or CIN 3 are kept under regular colposcopic follow-up throughout pregnancy.

What Should Be Considered After Colposcopy?

  • There may be mild spotting and groin pain.
  • If a biopsy was taken, 1 week sexual abstinence recommended.
  • You can take a standing shower, but do not go in the pool and do not use tampons.
  • Vaginal medication should not be used unless recommended by a doctor.

When Are Colposcopy Results Available?
