What is HPV Vaccine?

Who Can Get HPV Vaccine?
The HPV vaccine is generally recommended for children aged 9-14 years. 11-12 years is the age for routine vaccination. Catch-up vaccination can be performed in young people aged 13-26 years. In individuals between the ages of 27-45, vaccination can be administered on the recommendation of a physician after a risk assessment.
Can I get vaccinated after HPV infection?
Yes, even if you are infected with HPV, you can still be protected against other types. The vaccine provides strong protection against the types to which the person has not developed immunity. Vaccination is therefore also recommended for people infected with HPV.
How Many Doses Is HPV Vaccine Administered?
- 9-15 years of age: 2 doses (0 and 6 months)
- Over 15 years of age or immunocompromised individuals: 3 doses (0, 2 and 6 months)
Is HPV Vaccine Administered During Pregnancy?
HPV vaccination is not recommended during pregnancy. If the first dose is given during pregnancy, subsequent doses can be completed after delivery. The vaccine does not pose a significant risk during pregnancy, but it is postponed for preventive purposes.
How Long Does the HPV Vaccine Protect?
Clinical trials show that the HPV vaccine provides effective protection for at least 18 years. The long-term efficacy of the vaccine is ongoing and protection can be maintained with additional doses if necessary in the future.
Is HPV Vaccine Safe?
The HPV vaccine is FDA and World Health Organization (WHO) approved. Serious side effects are rare. The most common side effects are pain at the injection site, mild fever, headache and fatigue. Physician evaluation for allergic conditions is recommended.
Side Effects of HPV Vaccine
It is usually mild and transient:
- Redness, swelling, pain (at the injection site)
- Headache
- Mild malaise
