What is Hysterectomy?

Hysterectomy is the surgical removal of the uterus. This procedure is usually performed to treat gynecological problems and plays an important role in the treatment of diseases of the female reproductive system. A complete or partial removal of the uterus is called a hysterectomy.

Hysterectomy Objectives

1. Uterine Cancer Treatment: In patients diagnosed with uterine cancer, hysterectomy may be a treatment option to remove the cancerous tissue.
2. Uterine Prolapse In cases where the uterus cannot be held in place, a hysterectomy may be needed to treat uterine prolapse.
3. Myomas In the case of large fibroids or severe symptoms caused by fibroids, hysterectomy may be an option.
4. Endometriosis In the treatment of endometriosis, hysterectomy may be considered to remove foci of endometriosis.
5. Excessive Uterine Bleeding: In case of excessive uterine bleeding, a hysterectomy may be an option to stop the bleeding.

Types of Hysterectomy

1. Total Hysterectomy: The uterus and cervix (cervix) are completely removed.
2. Partial Hysterectomy: Only part of the uterus is removed, the cervix (cervix) is usually left.
3. Radical Hysterectomy The uterus, cervix, and pelvic lymph nodes are removed, which is often used to treat uterine cancer.

Hysterectomy Outcomes and Recovery

The recovery period after a hysterectomy varies depending on the patient's age, general health and the surgery performed. However, it is usually possible to return to normal daily activities within a few weeks. For some women, there may be changes in hormone levels after a hysterectomy and this may cause menopausal symptoms.
