PREGNANCY AND CHILDBIRTH

Cervical Failure

What is Cervical Failure? Cervical insufficiency is the premature and unwanted opening of the cervix. Normally, the cervix opens during labor, but when this happens early in pregnancy, it is called cervical insufficiency. This usually occurs between 16 and 24 weeks of pregnancy.

Symptoms of Cervical Failure: Cervical insufficiency usually does not present with obvious symptoms. However, the following symptoms may be associated with cervical insufficiency:

  • Increased vaginal discharge
  • Pelvic pressure sensation
  • Low back pain
  • Vaginal bleeding or spotting

Diagnosis of Cervical Failure: Cervical insufficiency is diagnosed by gynecological examination, ultrasonography and other medical tests. In addition, the diagnostic process is completed by taking into account the patient's medical history.

Treatment of Cervical Failure: Treatment for cervical insufficiency varies depending on the severity of the condition and the stage of pregnancy. Treatment options include:

  1. Cervical Suture: To treat cervical incompetence, the cervix can be stitched. This is known as cervical surgery or cerclage.
  2. Bed Rest: In some cases, severe restrictions or bed rest may be recommended during pregnancy.
  3. Progesterone Therapy: Progesterone hormone supplementation can help reduce the risk of cervical insufficiency.
  4. Regular Follow-up and Monitoring: Women with cervical insufficiency should be monitored regularly and be prepared for emergency intervention if necessary.
